Overview
Mount Carmel College of Nursing has a rich history that began in the early 20th century. Founded in 1903 by the Sisters of the Holy Cross, the school was initially called the Mount Carmel School of Nursing and was located on the Mount Carmel West campus. The sisters were dedicated to providing healthcare services to the community, and their vision inspired them to continually enhance nursing education. In 1941, the school earned the distinction of being one of the few nursing schools in the country to receive accreditation.
The first graduating class of 13 students earned a Diploma in Nursing in 1906. In 1945, the school moved to a new location on the Mount Carmel West campus, where it remained until 1984 when it relocated to its current location on the Mount Carmel East campus. The school became a college in 1969 and was renamed Mount Carmel College of Nursing. Under the visionary leadership of President/Dean Emeritus Ann Schiele, PhD, RN, the college continued to grow, enhancing technology, quality of faculty, and numbers of students.
In 1990, Mount Carmel College of Nursing became the first college in Ohio to offer a master's degree in nursing. In 2003, 100 years after its founding, the highly successful Graduate Program was initiated, offering a Master of Science in multiple tracks. From 2003 to 2013, the Second Degree Accelerated Program and Online RN-BSN Completion Program were initiated, and a satellite campus at Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster was established. Additionally, the state-of-the-art Center for Innovative Learning, the Health Sciences Library, apartment-style residence halls, and a Consumer Health Library to improve the health of the Franklinton community were all constructed during this time.
Today, Mount Carmel College of Nursing is a highly respected institution that offers a range of undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. The college has two campuses: the main campus located just west of downtown Columbus and a campus in Lancaster, Ohio, which is 45 minutes south of downtown. The college is known for its commitment to providing high-quality education and training to its students, as well as its dedication to serving the community.
In recent years, Mount Carmel College of Nursing has continued to grow and evolve, with the addition of new programs and initiatives. For example, the college now offers an RN to BSN completion program, which is available to students with priority consideration and special low tuition costs. The college also offers an advanced placement Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program, which is designed for students who are not currently in a nursing associate's degree program but are interested in transferring into a BSN program and completing it at an accelerated pace.
The commitment to innovation and advancement continues at Mount Carmel College of Nursing. In 2015, the Graduate Program expanded with the addition of the online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program, the highest-level clinical practice degree for the nursing profession.
